Our path into outdoor playground design started with surfacing, and we’re proud to offer not only the best surfacing product options, but the expertise to help you find the right option for your design, budget, and community.
Surfacing Options
Playground surfacing falls into two main types—loose-fill and unitary—each offers different benefits for safety, maintenance, accessibility and long-term investment. Many sites incorporate both, using loose fill in lower traffic areas and unitary surfacing in areas with higher accessibility or safety requirements. We’re happy to discuss which options are right for you.
Loose-Fill Surfacing
- Includes materials like engineered wood fiber and mulch
- Lower upfront cost and easiest to install
- More frequent maintenance required
- More frequent safety checks required to check depth and accessibility standards
Unitary Surfacing
- Includes pour-in-place rubberized material and turf
- Higher initial cost
- Maintains safety and accessibility standards long-term
- Offers flexibility in color and design
- Can incorporate custom elements like mounds, humps, and even logos and custom artwork
- Often includes a warranty to cover product defects
Maintenance
An important consideration in your surfacing choice is its maintenance requirements. We are happy to offer assistance with putting together an ongoing maintenance plan and connecting you with professional safety inspectors. See our Services if you’re interested.
